Robin Williams generated the laughs.
The best thing about being stuck in Kuwait waiting to go home is we happened to be here at the same time a USO show was passing through.
We were treated to performances by comedians Lewis Black and Robin Williams along with an acoustic but still stellar Kid Rock.
Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith and seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong also had some words of encouragement for the troops.
I have been a Robin Williams fan for years. In high school, I performed one of his early bits, "Rev. Earnest Angry," on stage in a skit in which I played a comedian. Meeting him today and shaking his hand was quite a thrill.
He was as manic as ever, jumping from accent to accent and impression to impression. He would be on one subject and a joke would spring him another direction. He poked fun at the Australian soldiers here and kept coming back to jokes about them again and again.
He was Robin Williams as only Robin Williams can be -- an American icon
can't say I have been a huge Kid Rock fan, though I do have at least one of his albums. But he won me over when he opened his show with "Sweet Home Alabama." In fact, his entire set was impressive, proving he has the talent and charisma to carry a show with just an acoustic guitar.
He didn't need stacks of amps, pyrotechnics and strippers to entertain. He strummed away at some of his fan favorites and had the crowd singing along.
He improvised some lyrics to stir up the crowd and performed an expletive-filled song about his breakup with Pamela Anderson that showed he knew his audience and what would draw the cheers.
Kid Rock proved he is a real talent that has staying power beyond all the trappings that make other entertainers appear better than they actually are.
But there was room on the stage for some strippers, so he didn't have to cut that from his act. Oh well, maybe next time.
