He’s sold more than 22 million albums, and there seems to be no end to his potential. Kid Rock will play in concert at the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground Monday, Aug. 4, the official start date of the annual Sturgis Motorcycyle Rally.
Robert James Ritchie (born January 17, 1971 in Romeo, Michigan), better known by his stage name Kid Rock, was cut loose by Jive Records in 1991 after his debut album, Grits Sandwiches For Breakfast.
Eight years later he came crashing onto the national scene with the explosive Devil Without A Cause CD. With the hit single “Bawitdaba”
Devil Without A Cause sold 12 million copies.
His duet, “Picture” with Sheryl Crow, (also a favorite at the Buffalo Chip), helped launch his 2001 album, Cocky, into world-wide, genre- crossing success. And his most recent release Rock N Roll Jesus debuted at number one across the country, aided by radio coverage of the single “So Hott.” Sturgis Rally music lovers have always supported Rock and his music in two prior appearances at the Legendary Buffalo Chip Campground.
Back in 1990, The State University of New York at Cortland was fined $23,700 for airing Kid Rock's first single "Yo Da Lin In The Valley,”
an ode to oral sex, which, by the way, answers the trivia question sent out in the Buffalo Chip’s newsletter.
In 2005, he inducted one of his heroes, Bob Seger into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And, later that year, he filled in for another major influence, Johnny Van Zant, of Lynyrd Skynyrd, on “Sweet Home Alabama” during a concert benefiting victims of Hurricane Katrina.
Rock is also known for his famous wedding to Pamela Anderson, which ended after only five months. The song, “Half Your Age,” on his latest album, Rock N Roll Jesus is a witty slap at his ex-wife.
In 2007, Kid Rock presented yet another Buffalo Chip Sturgis Rally favorite, ZZ Top, with a star at the Southwest Texas Hall of Fame.
Among the many reasons Kid Rock is so popular with The Buffalo Chip and the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally crowd it serves, is his devotion to our men in uniform. He has done several USO performances. And just last December, he joined Robin Williams,Lance Armstrong,Lewis Black and Miss USA Rachel Smith for a Christmas USO Tour in Iraq.
