PEORIA - Matt Bahan, the morning show host and program director for 105.7 "The X," recently persuaded Kid Rock to autograph an electric guitar, an acoustic guitar and a drum head. And while it would be something of a struggle for most people to part with such treasures, Bahan is happy to kiss them goodbye.
Starting April 21, the three items are going on the auction block at www.1057thexrocks.com/. Bahan said the proceeds from the auction will benefit two central Illinois military veterans. Karl Newman, a former Marine who served in Iraq in 2006,suffered a brain injury from an IED incident. Micah Weaver, a member of the 182nd Airlift Wing of the Air Guard, also suffered a brain injury while serving.
Both veterans recently got to meet Kid Rock at his Bloomington tour stop, when the singer signed the guitars and drum head.
Bahan said the whole "Support the troops," mentality shouldn't stop when veterans return home.
"We get a lot of e-mails at the station from folks who are serving overseas and folks who have come home, and we hear a lot of the details of things that are going on with certain soldiers from central Illinois who have gotten injured or had struggles since they got back. At the end of the day, a lot of troops still have the struggles of paying their medical bills that are coming in."
The bidding starts at $100 for the guitars and $50 for the drum head. The proceeds will be split evenly between the two families, and Bahan said he hopes to continue raising funds for local troops.
"This is just phase one," Bahan said. "I want to be able to keep doing things as the year goes on, whether it's more online auctions or a (benefit) concert. Whatever it may be, we want to keep the ball rolling with helping these guys."
