The rock star on going to war with Peta, owning a belt buckle worth $150,000, wearing the American flag and why looking cool is all about swagger
I begged my mum for the red leather jacket Michael Jackson wore in Beat It.
She kept telling me it was too expensive and that we could get the exact same one at K-Mart. But that was the plastic one, and I’d moan because you had to have the real stuff. I’d like to find one now, though. I’ve been looking for ages but can’t find it anywhere. I want a black one, with chains on. It would be hysterical to roll up to a party with a box of Kentucky Fried Chicken and a Beat It jacket on.
I want to go to war with Peta.
My biggest extravagance is fur coats – I’ve got every kind of animal in my wardrobe. I’m just willing the animal rights protesters to chuck some red paint on me. I understand people’s problems with it but to throw paint on someone is just wrong. They only do it to little Hollywood actresses who can’t defend themselves.
The last thing I ever wanted was a clothing company.
This guy I knew as a kid had his own line called Made In Detroit. It was in trouble so I tried to help him out. It’s doing pretty well now. Last year, it turned a profit for the first time, so I think it’s time to get more involved. We’ve now trademarked Made In Nashville and Made In Vegas to expand the brand. Nobody wants to look the same, so we can have different lines for every part of America.
I have a belt buckle worth $150,000.
It’s a big, gold buffalo skull, encrusted with diamonds and rubies. I love gold – rings, jewellery, chains, belt buckles... And I love to customise things. I’m working on some new stuff at the moment.
Going to a hat shop is one of the best things in life.
There’s an old hat store that’s been in Detroit since the turn of the century. It’s one of the few places you can go and still get good service. Nowadays, unless you’re shopping in places like Gucci or Louis Vuitton, service is dead. Even then they get it wrong because they ask me if I want a glass of champagne. Hell no, I want a whisky.
I love wearing the American flag.
There was a big fuss when I wore one to the Superbowl in 2004. I don’t regret it. At the end of they day I’m pretty vocal about America and our soldiers. It was just my way of expressing my patriotism.
I recently turned up to a golf event in a pair of overalls.
I’d been invited to play in a pro-am golf event and I warned them that if I’m coming, I’m coming as Kid Rock. They told me to put a shirt on and I refused just to prove the point. I’m Kid Rock. I’m not a good golfer. If people have come out to see me they want to be entertained. So my thought is, ‘Hey, look at the monkey.’ I won’t change myself for anyone; I am who I am.
I never wear make-up.
I won’t do it for TV shows or photo shoots. I don’t do any of that stuff. To me it’s just false advertising. You’re just saying, ‘I don’t really look this good.’ The most I ever do when it comes to grooming is a little lotion on my hands in the winter to stop them cracking.
Working out really bothers me.
I try to eat sensibly and I’ll happily play basketball for a couple of hours every night, but getting up early and going into the gym? No way. I’ve got one in my house, which I’ve probably only set foot in three or four times.
Looking cool is all about swagger – not about the clothes.
There’s nothing more attractive to me than when somebody is comfortable being themselves. It could be the most ridiculous outfit in the world, but if that’s them and they’re comfortable, then to me that’s great. But cool is a tough thing. You just can’t buy it.
