Mardi Gras will have a Michigan flavor this year — thanks to Kid Rock.
The Clarkston-based musician has been announced as the grand marshal for this year’s Krewe of Endymion parade, which takes place Saturday afternoon as part of New Orleans’ annual Mardi Gras celebration.
“The good people of New Orleans thought it a good idea to elect myself the Grand Marshal of one of the biggest parties in the world. I’ve been training for something like this my whole life,” Kid Rock, whose real name is Bob Ritchie, said Wednesday.
“I plan to represent and not let them down.”
The Krewe of Endymion was founded in 1967 and named for the Olympian God of Fertility and Eternal Youth — which certainly fits Rock’s hard-partying rock ‘n’ roll image. The event bills itself as “the largest nonmilitary parade in the world” and is followed by an Endymion Extravaganza in the Louisiana SuperDome.
The Krewe’s motto is “Token of Youth,” while Krewe members are known to shout out, “Throw ‘til it hurts!”
The Endymion honor follows Rock’s performance at the 51st Annual Grammy Awards Feb. 8.
He’s currently working on a followup to his double-platinum 2007 album “Rock N Roll Jesus” and begins his next concert tour in mid-April.
